International Aviation Academy of New Zealand (IAANZ)

The International Aviation Academy of New Zealand trains pilots from a purpose-built facility directly opposite the passenger terminals at Christchurch International Airport. Founded in 1993 as the professional training division of the Canterbury Aero Club, itself established in 1928, the academy has spent more than three decades producing airline-ready graduates.

Training at a busy international airport is the academy's defining advantage. Students work in controlled airspace with full instrument approach aids from day one, absorbing the rhythm of airline operations rather than meeting it for the first time after graduation. As a preferred training partner in Air New Zealand's Aviation Institute, IAANZ builds its programs around current airline hiring standards, with the NZQA-approved New Zealand Diploma in Aviation as the flagship qualification.

The fleet of around 28 aircraft mixes glass-cockpit and analogue types, backed by modern flight simulation training devices. Students also fly from West Melton, an exclusive Canterbury Aero Club satellite airfield minutes from Christchurch, and from Rangiora. A dedicated 10-hour mountain flying component over the Southern Alps is built into the syllabus, terrain experience that would be a costly add-on almost anywhere else.
